Types of leave

Paid time off

Employees accrue 1.5 days of leave for each month of work, which increases to 3.5 days of leave every month after five years of service with the same employer. Employees are entitled to vacation benefits paid in full before their vacation commences.

Public holidays

Cameroonian employees are entitled to take the 10 national public holidays as paid days off work.

Sick days

Cameroonian labor laws guarantee employees five days of paid sick leave annually and hold employers responsible for any hospital bills charged if an employee gets injured or falls sick on the job.

Maternity leave

Female employees are entitled to 14 weeks of maternity leave, starting four weeks before delivery (or six, if advised by health personnel), with leave benefits paid by the National Social Insurance Fund.

Paternity/Parental leave

Fathers can exercise their allotted 10 days of paid family leave (explained below) as paternity leave.

Other leave

  • Family functions: employees can take 10 paid days off work to attend important family functions like weddings and funerals.

Employment termination

Termination process

In Cameroon, the employer must provide a reason for termination that fits into one of the following categories:

  • gross misconduct (known as a summary dismissal)
  • constructive dismissal/resignation (dismissal or resignation forced by the conduct of either party)
  • termination of contracts of unspecified duration by the will of either party (known as mutual termination)
  • Lay off resulting from accidents, force majeure, or an unfavorable economic situation

Notice period

Indefinite-term contracts can be terminated at will with prior notice and one week off provided for employees to start exploring new opportunities.

Severance pay

Severance packages are defined by the Cameroonian Labour Minister and can vary, depending on industry and employee seniority.

Probation periods

Probation periods are defined in employment contracts and can last from six to eight months for managerial staff.
